OUR MOTHER THE MOUNTAIN REVISITED
Townes Van Zandt was a folk hero in Jacob Thomas Carr’s native Texas, but devotees who once dubbed him the songwriter’s songwriter grow fewer by the day. Intimately familiar with Townes’ works, Carr recognized their timeless themes and refused to see them slide into obscurity - the resultant project is an incredibly ambitious reimagining of Van Zandt’s seminal record.
Originally released in 1969, Our Mother the Mountain is as poetic and tragic as the artist himself, plumbing the depths of the human experience – it knew no peers in its time, nor does it now. Carr’s affection for the album is clear, contemporizing each piece with wholly unique arrangements that masterfully compliment the surreal beauty and pain of Townes’ lyrics.
Guipago (Gui-pah-gho) Dreams* is an alternative country / experimental folk act based in NYC. Jacob Thomas Carr & Shannon Helene Barnes’ vocals whisper and roar in perfect complement to a rich, southern gothic soundscape.
*Meaning alone among wolves, Guipago was a great warrior and the last principal chief of the Kiowa people indigenous to the Great Plains. JTC invokes his name in recognition of the territory’s tragic history and the inherent complications of calling oneself Texan.
